Carlsbad Caverns Wilderness Area

Carlsbad Caverns Wilderness Area protects over 31,000 acres of remote backcountry in southeastern New Mexico. This is genuine wilderness—no roads, no motors, no mechanized travel of any kind. Visitors come here to hike and backpack through primitive terrain, seeking solitude and untrammeled landscape far from developed areas.

The wilderness operates under strict Leave No Trace principles. You'll encounter no maintained trails, trailheads, or facilities; travel is self-navigated and self-supported. Access requires planning: most visitors enter from the main Carlsbad Caverns National Park area, though backcountry entry points exist. Spring and fall offer the most comfortable conditions, while summer heat and winter cold present real hazards in this exposed, high-desert environment.

This is a destination for experienced backcountry users comfortable with route-finding, water scarcity, and minimal infrastructure. The National Park Service manages it as true wilderness, which means the experience is intentionally challenging and unmediated.
