Capitan Mountains Wilderness

Capitan Mountains Wilderness is a 36,074-acre federally protected backcountry area in New Mexico managed by the Forest Service. It preserves a primitive landscape where no roads, motors, or mechanized travel are permitted—a true non-motorized wilderness open only to foot traffic and traditional backcountry pursuits.

The area offers hiking and backpacking in a rugged, undeveloped setting where solitude and self-reliance are core to the experience. Visitors should expect remote terrain with minimal infrastructure and come prepared for wilderness conditions. Access is typically via trailheads on the periphery; plan ahead and consult with the Forest Service for current conditions and route-finding.

Wilderness rules are strictly enforced: leave no trace, pack out all waste, camp responsibly away from water sources, and respect the non-motorized character of the area. Weather can be variable; spring and fall are generally favorable, while winter brings snow and ice that can limit access. Summer heat is significant at lower elevations.
