Calico Mountains Wilderness Area

Calico Mountains Wilderness Area is a 64,965-acre federally protected wilderness in northern Nevada, managed by the Bureau of Land Management. It offers backcountry hiking and backpacking in a primitive, non-motorized setting where solitude and self-reliance are central to the experience.

As a designated Wilderness Area, the landscape is free from roads, motors, and mechanized travel. Visitors must travel on foot or horseback and follow Leave No Trace principles—pack out what you pack in, camp away from water sources, and travel lightly across the land. There are no maintained facilities, trailheads, or developed infrastructure; access requires navigation skills and careful planning.

Visit during the warmer months when weather is most stable and snow is minimal. Spring and fall offer pleasant conditions, though winter snow and cold make travel difficult and potentially dangerous. Bring a map, compass, and water, and be prepared for self-rescue in a remote setting far from cell service and help.
