Cahuilla Mountain Wilderness

Cahuilla Mountain Wilderness is a 5,575-acre federally protected wilderness area in California managed by the Forest Service. This is primitive backcountry where roads, motors, and mechanized travel are prohibited—visitors come here to experience solitude and self-reliance on foot or horseback.

The area offers hiking and backpacking as the primary ways to explore its landscape. Because it is designated Wilderness, all visitors must follow Leave No Trace principles: pack out what you pack in, camp in established spots away from water sources, use established trails, and respect the non-motorized character of the place. Access requires driving to a trailhead; check with the Forest Service for current conditions and any seasonal closures before you go.

The best time to visit is during the moderate months when temperatures and water availability support backcountry travel. Winter can bring snow and hazardous conditions depending on elevation. Plan ahead, bring a map and compass or GPS, and understand that wilderness travel demands self-sufficiency and preparation.
