Burden Falls Wilderness

Burden Falls Wilderness is a 3,740-acre federally protected Wilderness Area in Illinois, managed by the Forest Service. It offers primitive backcountry hiking and backpacking in a non-motorized landscape where solitude and Leave No Trace principles are the foundation of the visitor experience.

As a designated Wilderness, the area is closed to roads, motorized travel, and mechanized equipment. Visitors should expect a backcountry setting with minimal infrastructure—this is a place for self-reliant hikers and backpackers seeking to move quietly through the landscape on foot. Access is limited to non-motorized trails, and all visitors are expected to follow Leave No Trace practices: pack out what you pack in, camp below ridgelines, filter or treat water, and respect the primitive character of the land.

Visit during the warmer months when trails are most passable and conditions favor backpacking. Winter brings hazardous conditions that can make access difficult.
