About Broad Canyon Wilderness Area

Broad Canyon Wilderness Area spans nearly 16,000 acres of federally protected backcountry in southwestern New Mexico, managed by the Bureau of Land Management. This is primitive country: no roads, no motors, no mechanized travel of any kind. What you'll find is remote canyon and desert terrain suited to foot travel and solitude-seeking backpackers and hikers willing to navigate without developed trails.

Access is a practical matter—trailheads and parking are typically on BLM land adjacent to the wilderness boundary, and you'll need to plan your entry point before you go. Once inside, the rules are strict: Leave No Trace applies fully. Pack out everything you pack in, camp on durable surfaces away from water, and travel on foot. This is the real backcountry, not a recreation area with amenities. Spring and fall offer the most comfortable conditions; summer heat and winter cold and snow can make travel difficult. Bring map and compass or GPS—this is no place to rely on signs or a guidebook alone.
