Breton National Wildlife Refuge.Wilderness Area

Breton National Wildlife Refuge Wilderness Area protects nearly 12,000 acres of coastal Louisiana landscape managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. This is true federally designated Wilderness—motorized access, mechanized travel, and roads are prohibited. Visitors come here for backcountry hiking, backpacking, and the solitude that comes with primitive conditions.

Access is limited and requires planning; there are no maintained trailheads or infrastructure typical of developed parks. Travel is non-motorized only, meaning you navigate on foot through the landscape as it exists. Visitors must follow Leave No Trace principles strictly—pack out what you pack in, camp responsibly, and respect the refuge's wildlife mission. The coastal setting means weather and water conditions can change quickly, particularly during hurricane season. Spring through early fall offers the most feasible window for a visit, though summer heat and humidity are intense. Winter storms and seasonal flooding create hazardous conditions.
