Breadloaf Wilderness is a 24,985-acre federally protected Wilderness Area in Vermont, managed by the Forest Service. It preserves a primitive backcountry landscape where hikers and backpackers can find genuine solitude far from roads and development. Visitors should expect true wilderness conditions: no roads, no motorized travel, and no mechanized access of any kind. This is backcountry on foot only. The area operates under strict Leave No Trace principles—pack out everything you pack in, camp only in designated areas where permitted, and respect the landscape's fragile recovery. Access is limited to foot traffic, which means reaching the interior requires time and self-sufficiency. Spring and early summer can bring muddy, wet conditions; fall offers drier travel and clear views.
