Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness

The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness is a sprawling federally protected wilderness of over one million acres in northeastern Minnesota, managed by the Forest Service. It is a non-motorized backcountry where roads, motors, and mechanized travel are prohibited. The landscape consists of boreal forest interspersed with thousands of lakes and waterways that define the character of the region.

The wilderness is primarily accessed by canoe and paddle, making it a premier destination for flat-water paddling and backcountry camping. Visitors also hike and backpack overland between water bodies. The area demands self-reliance and Leave No Trace ethics—all waste must be packed out, fires are restricted, and permits are required. Access points are limited to designated entry points, and the wilderness remains remote and lightly developed by design. Summer and early fall offer the most favorable conditions, though the season is relatively brief in this northern climate.
