Blackbeard Island National Wildlife Refuge.Wilderness Area

Blackbeard Island National Wildlife Refuge Wilderness Area protects 2,742 acres of coastal Georgia landscape managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as federally designated Wilderness. This is primitive backcountry where motorized access, roads, and mechanized travel are prohibited—visitors arrive by water and navigate on foot through an undeveloped natural setting.

The refuge offers backcountry hiking and camping for those seeking solitude and an untracked wilderness experience. Access requires paddling or boating to the island, after which all travel is non-motorized. Visitors must follow Leave No Trace principles strictly: pack out all waste, camp responsibly, and leave no trace of your passage. There are no facilities, marked trails, or infrastructure—this is genuine backcountry travel suited to experienced outdoor users comfortable with navigation and self-sufficiency.

Visit during milder months when coastal weather is most stable. Spring through early fall offers the best conditions for paddling access and camping.
