Black Rock Desert Wilderness Area

Black Rock Desert Wilderness Area spans nearly 315,000 acres of remote, high-desert backcountry in northern Nevada. This is true wilderness—roadless and motorized-travel-free, managed by the Bureau of Land Management under federal Wilderness designation. Expect open, expansive terrain typical of the Great Basin: sparse vegetation, wide vistas, and a sense of profound solitude.

Hiking and backpacking are the primary pursuits here. The landscape rewards self-reliant visitors willing to navigate without established trails and plan water resupply carefully in an arid environment. Camping is allowed throughout the Wilderness under Leave No Trace principles—pack out all waste, camp on durable surfaces away from water sources, and respect the primitive character of the place.

Access is via trailheads and staging areas on BLM land surrounding the Wilderness boundary; check with the managing BLM office for current conditions and entry points. Summer and early fall offer the most comfortable visiting windows, though spring and late fall are feasible. Winter brings harsh conditions and is generally not recommended. This is backcountry for experienced desert travelers: bring ample water, navigation tools, and self-sufficiency.
