Black Mountain Wilderness Area

Black Mountain Wilderness Area spans nearly 21,000 acres of federally protected backcountry in California, managed by the Bureau of Land Management. This is primitive wilderness—no roads, motors, or mechanized travel are permitted. Visitors come here to hike and backpack in solitude, moving through the landscape on foot alone.

Access requires leaving your vehicle behind and entering on trail. The wilderness operates under strict Leave No Trace principles: pack out everything you pack in, camp responsibly, and travel lightly across the land. This is not a place of facilities or convenience—it is wild country where you are responsible for your own safety, navigation, and environmental stewardship. Spring through fall are the practical visiting seasons, though conditions vary by elevation and weather.
