Black Fork Mountain Wilderness

Black Fork Mountain Wilderness is a 13,466-acre federally designated Wilderness Area in Arkansas, managed by the Forest Service. It offers backcountry hiking and backpacking in a primitive, non-motorized landscape where solitude and self-reliance are central to the experience.

As a protected Wilderness, the area operates under strict regulations: no roads, motors, or mechanized travel are permitted. Visitors must travel on foot or horseback and follow Leave No Trace principles—packing out all waste, camping away from water sources, and minimizing impact on the land. This designation preserves the area's wild character but demands that visitors arrive prepared for true backcountry conditions.

Access is limited to trailheads at the wilderness boundary; there are no facilities within the area itself. Spring through fall offers the most reliable conditions for travel, though weather can be variable. Winter ice and snow can make hiking hazardous. Plan accordingly with proper gear, navigation tools, and an understanding that you are responsible for your own safety and the land's protection.
