Black Elk Wilderness

Black Elk Wilderness is a 13,534-acre federally protected Wilderness Area in South Dakota, managed by the Forest Service. It preserves primitive backcountry where no roads, motors, or mechanized travel are permitted—only foot and pack stock access. The landscape offers hiking and backpacking through non-motorized terrain where solitude and Leave No Trace principles define the visitor experience.

Visitors should expect genuine wilderness conditions. Access is foot-traffic only; all travel must be on foot or via stock animals. There are no facilities, maintained trails, or modern infrastructure. This is the reality of federally designated Wilderness: you're responsible for navigation, self-sufficiency, and strict adherence to wilderness rules.
