Black Canyon Wilderness

Black Canyon Wilderness is a 13,090-acre federally protected wilderness area in Oregon, managed by the Forest Service. It offers backcountry hiking and backpacking in a primitive setting where solitude and non-motorized travel are the core experience. No roads, motors, or mechanized equipment are permitted—this is genuine wilderness country where you move under your own power and leave no trace of your passage.

Access is on foot only, and the season runs roughly from late spring through early fall, depending on snow melt and weather. Plan for rugged terrain and self-sufficiency; wilderness regulations require you to camp responsibly, pack out all waste, and respect the area's protected status. Summer months offer the most reliable access, though shoulder seasons can work for prepared hikers.
