Bighorn Mountain Wilderness

Bighorn Mountain Wilderness is a 12,056-acre federally protected wilderness area in California, managed by the Forest Service. It offers primitive backcountry terrain for visitors seeking non-motorized recreation in an undeveloped landscape.

Hiking and backpacking are the primary pursuits here. The wilderness provides solitude and distance from roads and developed infrastructure—a genuine backcountry experience where foot travel is the only way in and out.

As a designated Wilderness Area, strict rules apply: no motorized vehicles, no mechanical travel (including mountain bikes), and no road construction. All visitors must practice Leave No Trace principles, packing out what they pack in and minimizing impact on the land. This is primitive country by design, suited to hikers and backpackers comfortable with self-sufficiency and respect for the wilderness resource.
