Big Rocks Wilderness Area

Big Rocks Wilderness Area is a 12,966-acre federally protected wilderness in Nevada managed by the Bureau of Land Management. As a designated Wilderness Area, it is entirely primitive backcountry closed to roads, motorized vehicles, and mechanized travel of any kind. Visitors must travel on foot, pack stock, or by other non-motorized means.

The area offers solitude and untracked backcountry experience for hikers and backpackers willing to navigate without maintained trail infrastructure. This is genuine wilderness—expect no facilities, no marked routes, and minimal human presence. A Leave No Trace ethic is both legally required and essential; pack out everything you pack in, camp responsibly, and travel with minimal impact.

Access is limited and unmarked. Seasonal snow and desert conditions affect visitability; spring and fall typically offer the most stable conditions. Winter can bring significant snow and hazardous terrain. Summer heat is a serious consideration in the Nevada desert. Come prepared for true backcountry self-sufficiency—navigation skills, water planning, and wilderness experience are not optional.
