About Big Branch Wilderness

Big Branch Wilderness is a 6,625-acre federally protected Wilderness Area in Vermont, managed by the Forest Service. The area offers primitive backcountry hiking and backpacking in a non-motorized setting where solitude and undeveloped landscape are the primary draw.

Visitors to Big Branch should expect genuine wilderness conditions: no roads, no motor vehicles, and no mechanized travel of any kind. This is backcountry hiking and backpacking terrain, and all visitors must practice Leave No Trace principles. Access is on foot only, and the landscape remains largely untrammeled by development—the defining character of a federally designated Wilderness Area.

The best time to visit is late spring through early fall, when weather is most stable and trails are passable. Winter conditions and snow can make access difficult. Plan for self-sufficiency once you enter; there are no facilities or services within the Wilderness itself.
