About Ansel Adams Wilderness
Ansel Adams Wilderness encompasses over 230,000 acres of federally protected backcountry in California, managed by the Forest Service as a primitive, non-motorized landscape. The area offers hiking and backpacking opportunities across rugged terrain, with solitude as a defining feature of the experience. Access is limited to foot travel; no roads, motorized vehicles, or mechanized travel are permitted. Visitors are expected to follow Leave No Trace principles and wilderness regulations that govern camping, water use, and waste management. The wilderness season is constrained by weather and snow; summer and early fall are the primary windows for safe travel, though conditions vary by elevation and exposure. Expect remote, challenging terrain and come prepared with maps, navigation skills, and self-sufficiency.
