Winema National Forest

Winema National Forest spans over 920,000 acres across south-central Oregon, offering a diverse landscape for outdoor recreation managed by the U.S. Forest Service. The forest supports a wide range of activities including hiking and backpacking on its trail network, dispersed camping throughout the backcountry, fishing in streams and lakes, and scenic driving on forest roads. Hunting is permitted during designated seasons, and the forest welcomes wildlife viewing and photography year-round.

Access is best from late spring through early fall, when high-elevation snow melts and most roads and trails become passable. Winter brings significant snow at higher elevations, creating hazardous conditions and seasonal closures. Summer and early fall represent peak visiting season, offering stable weather and full access to the forest's remote interior and developed recreation areas.
