Uncompahgre National Forest

Uncompahgre National Forest spans nearly 583,000 acres across Colorado and offers the full range of public-land recreation. The forest supports hiking and backpacking on its trail network, fishing in streams and lakes, horseback riding, hunting during designated seasons, and dispersed camping throughout. Scenic driving access points let visitors experience the landscape by vehicle. Winter brings snow to the higher elevations, opening the forest to snowshoeing and cross-country skiing, though access can become limited or impossible on some roads and trails.

Visitation peaks in summer and early fall when weather is stable and trails are snow-free. Spring and late fall offer quieter conditions but with variable snow cover at elevation. Winter travel requires careful planning and appropriate gear; many forest roads and higher-elevation trails become impassable. The Forest Service manages the land for multiple uses, so you'll encounter a mix of users—hikers, hunters, anglers, and others—particularly during popular seasons.
