St. Joe National Forest

St. Joe National Forest spans nearly 490,000 acres across Idaho, offering a wide range of outdoor recreation across multiple-use public land managed by the Forest Service. The forest supports hiking, backpacking, and dispersed camping throughout its terrain, along with fishing opportunities in streams and rivers. Hunting is available during designated seasons, and scenic driving provides access to the landscape without extensive backcountry travel.

Access and seasonal conditions shape a visit here. Summer and early fall—roughly June through September—offer the most reliable conditions for trail travel and camping. Winter weather can close or severely limit access to higher elevations and remote areas from December through March. Spring and late fall present transitional conditions that may require flexibility in plans. As with most National Forest land in Idaho, dispersed camping is permitted in many areas, offering a low-cost alternative to developed facilities.
