Shawnee National Forest

Shawnee National Forest spans over 223,000 acres across southern Illinois and offers a mix of outdoor recreation across woodlands and waterways. The forest supports hiking and backpacking on established trail networks, dispersed camping throughout much of the property, and fishing in streams and impoundments. Hunting is permitted during designated seasons. Scenic driving routes wind through the forest, and wildlife viewing and photography opportunities are available year-round.

The region experiences four distinct seasons. Spring and fall offer moderate temperatures ideal for hiking and camping. Summer is warm and humid but popular for water-based recreation. Winter can bring freezing conditions and occasional snow, which may limit access to some areas. The best visiting window is typically late spring through early fall, though the forest remains accessible most of the year depending on recent weather and road conditions.
