San Juan National Forest

San Juan National Forest spans nearly 786,000 acres across southwestern Colorado, offering a mix of high-country terrain and river valleys managed by the US Forest Service as public, multiple-use land. The forest supports a broad range of outdoor pursuits: backpacking and hiking on established trails, dispersed camping throughout the forest, fishing in streams and lakes, scenic driving on forest roads, and hunting during designated seasons. Access and timing depend on elevation and snow. Lower trails and dispersed campsites are often passable from late spring through fall, though high-country routes may remain snow-covered into early summer. Winter weather closes many higher roads and trails between December and March, while lower-elevation areas may remain accessible. Plan ahead for water sources, weather exposure, and current road conditions, as parts of the forest are remote and services are limited nearby.
