Salmon National Forest

Salmon National Forest spans over 500,000 acres across central Idaho, offering a mix of backcountry and accessible recreation on public land managed by the Forest Service. The forest supports fishing in mountain streams and lakes, hiking and backpacking on established trails, dispersed camping throughout the landscape, and hunting during designated seasons. Scenic driving routes wind through the forest, and horseback riding is common on many trails. Winter brings snowshoe and cross-country ski opportunities in higher elevations.

Access is generally good from nearby communities, though many roads and higher-elevation areas are seasonal. Spring snowmelt can make high passes impassable until early summer, and heavy snow typically closes higher terrain from December through March. The best time to visit is summer through early fall, when trails are clear and weather is stable. Plan ahead for permits if required and check current conditions with the Forest Service, as access and facility availability vary by season and weather.
