Payette National Forest

Payette National Forest spans over 612,000 acres across central Idaho, offering a broad landscape of backcountry and roadside recreation. The forest supports hiking, backpacking, dispersed camping, and fishing in alpine lakes and streams. Hunting seasons draw visitors in fall, and scenic driving routes provide access to the forest's varied terrain. Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are possible during winter months when snow permits.

Access is year-round via highways and forest roads, though high-elevation areas may close or become difficult to reach between November and April. Summer and early fall are the primary seasons, with July through September offering stable weather and full trail access. Dispersed camping is available throughout the forest on USFS land, and anglers will find streams and lakes stocked seasonally. The forest is managed by the U.S. Forest Service for multiple-use recreation, wildlife habitat, and watershed protection.
