Ochoco National Forest

Ochoco National Forest spans nearly 760,000 acres across northeastern Oregon and offers a mix of recreation typical of public forest land in the region. The forest supports hiking and backpacking, fishing in streams and lakes, dispersed camping, and hunting during designated seasons. A network of trails and forest roads provides access to the landscape, and scenic driving routes run through the area. Winter conditions close or restrict many high-elevation routes, making summer and early fall the primary visiting season.

Access is via US highways and forest roads from the surrounding communities. Spring and early summer can bring muddy or snow-blocked conditions at higher elevations, while winter weather typically shuts down many interior areas by December. Visitors should check current conditions and road status with the Forest Service before traveling, especially outside the main recreation window from June through September.
