About Nezperce National Forest

Nez Perce National Forest spans nearly 728,000 acres across central Idaho, offering extensive backcountry and dispersed recreation opportunities across public land managed by the Forest Service. The forest supports a range of activities including hiking, backpacking, and fishing, with dispersed camping available throughout much of the landscape. Hunting seasons draw visitors in fall, and scenic driving routes provide access to the varied terrain.

Access and seasonal conditions shape a visit here. Snow and winter weather typically close or severely limit high-elevation travel from December through March, while the core recreation season runs from late spring through early fall. Spring and fall shoulder months can offer good conditions, though weather remains variable. Summer months provide the most reliable access to trails and backcountry areas, making June through September the primary window for most visitors.
