Kootenai National Forest

Kootenai National Forest spans over 1.3 million acres across Montana, offering a vast landscape of public land managed by the Forest Service for multiple uses. The forest supports a full range of outdoor recreation including hiking and backpacking on established trails, dispersed camping throughout the backcountry, fishing in streams and lakes, and scenic driving routes that wind through the forest. Hunting is permitted during designated seasons, and the forest's network of roads and trails accommodates mountain biking and horseback riding as well.

Access is year-round, though snow and weather significantly limit travel from late fall through early spring. Summer and early fall represent the prime season for most activities, when trails are clear and campsites are accessible. Winter conditions can make higher elevations and many forest roads impassable, while spring sees lingering snow at higher elevations. Visitors should be prepared for variable weather and come with proper maps, as cell service is limited throughout much of the forest.
