Grand Mesa National Forest

Grand Mesa National Forest spans nearly 181,000 acres across western Colorado, offering a broad landscape for outdoor recreation across seasons. The forest supports hiking, backpacking, and camping on both designated trails and dispersed sites throughout its public lands. Fishing opportunities exist in streams and lakes scattered across the forest. Scenic driving routes provide access to views and trailheads for visitors who prefer car-based recreation. Access is primarily via county and forest roads from surrounding towns. Summer and early fall represent the most reliable visiting season, when snow has cleared from most trails and dispersed camping sites are accessible. Spring and late fall shoulder seasons can work but require checking current conditions, as higher elevations retain snow into early summer and roads may close with early season snow. Winter travel is possible but depends heavily on road maintenance and snow levels—many forest roads become impassable or hazardous. Visitor facilities are basic; the forest is managed for multiple use rather than intensive recreation development.
