About Eldorado National Forest

Eldorado National Forest spans over 455,000 acres across California's central Sierra region, offering a mix of meadows, forest, and alpine terrain. The forest supports a broad range of recreational uses: hikers and backpackers will find extensive trail networks, campers can choose between developed campgrounds and dispersed camping throughout the forest, and anglers can pursue trout in streams and lakes. Hunters pursue deer and other game during designated seasons, and scenic drives wind through the forest, offering access to viewpoints and trailheads.

The forest is most accessible from late spring through early fall, when snow melts from higher elevations and roads open fully. Winter conditions can render many areas inaccessible, though some lower-elevation trails and roads may remain passable. Summer and early fall are peak seasons for both day-use recreation and overnight camping. Plan ahead for popular areas, particularly on weekends, and check current conditions with the Forest Service before your trip.
