About Coconino National Forest
Coconino National Forest spans over 1.5 million acres across Arizona, offering diverse recreation across high-elevation terrain. The forest supports hiking, backpacking, and camping on dispersed sites throughout its managed lands. Fishing opportunities exist in various waterways, and scenic driving routes traverse the forest. Hunting seasons operate during designated periods, and the forest welcomes horseback riding and wildlife viewing year-round.
Access is generally good via maintained roads and trailheads, though conditions vary with elevation and season. Summer months (June through September) see the most reliable weather and heaviest use. Winter brings snow at higher elevations, limiting access and increasing hazards from December through March. Spring and fall offer moderate conditions and fewer crowds, making those shoulder seasons appealing for many visitors.
