Kawuneeche

The Kawuneeche Trail is an 18.5-mile out-and-back route in Colorado that offers hikers a substantial day adventure with 1,500 feet of elevation gain. Located near Grand Lake on the western side of Rocky Mountain National Park, this trail provides access to pristine backcountry terrain in the park's less-crowded western region. The trail follows the North Inlet drainage, ascending gradually through lodgepole pine and spruce-fir forest before opening into alpine meadows. Hikers encounter views of the Never Summer Mountains and can reach cascading streams and meadow vistas along the route. The moderate elevation gain is distributed across the full distance, making it manageable for hikers with moderate fitness levels. Water sources are available along the trail, including North Inlet Creek. The route is accessible from late spring through early fall, depending on snowmelt and conditions. This out-and-back format allows hikers to turn around at any point, making it flexible for different experience levels and time constraints. The trail provides excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing and photography in Rocky Mountain National Park's scenic backcountry.
